Permissions

Authors must ensure they have the proper rights to reproduce any material (such as figures, schemes, tables, or text excerpts) that is not in the public domain or for which they do not hold the copyright. Permissions should be requested from the original copyright holder (usually the publisher, as noted in the publication’s imprint) for any content used.

Permission is required for:

  • Your own works published by other publishers if you did not retain copyright.
  • Substantial extracts from any work or a series of works.
  • Use of tables, graphs, charts, schemes, and artworks that are unaltered or only slightly modified.
  • Photographs or any other content for which you do not hold the copyright.

Permission is not required for:

  • Reconstruction of your own table using data already published elsewhere, as long as you properly cite the source, for example: “Data from…” or “Adapted from…”.
  • Short quotes that are reasonably brief and fall under fair use.
  • Graphs, charts, schemes, and artworks that are completely redrawn and significantly altered beyond recognition.
